I'm writing a thesis from the following topic - African-Americans in the Civil War. Could anybody suggest a thesis statement for this topic? Furthermore, does anybody have primary sources - for example, letter, extracts from diaries - from this topic?

Thanks!

For primary resources related to orders and communactions I would suggest using the Official Reports, a link of which can be found above my singature line...

We have several lengthy treads on the topic. Use the seach function for "black confederate."

Contrary to popular belief, the USCT was not 100% officered by white men. Perhaps a topic for your thesis would be to spotlight these African-Americans and how their backgrounds, so obviously different than their fellow Blacks, got them so far in society's pecking order.

That would be an interesting paper if there are primary sources to tell it.

Way too large of a topic for a thesis. For example, what do you mean by "in the Civil War" Any one living at that time was in the CW. or do you mean soldier or do you mean Yank or do you mean Reb or do you mean on the home front? Free or slave? The title as you gave it would be too large in my mind.

I would narrow it down to those who won decorations, such as the Medal of Honor. Charlie Jordan of Williamson County, Tenn., joined the USCTs in 1864 and won the MOH fighting Apaches out West. I'm not suggesting him necessarily, but this is a subject that needs to be brought to the public's attention.

I would be interested to see something on those black soldiers that were selected for special duty. The engineers in the Le Corps de Afique would be an interesting topic but after years of trying to find first hand sources have become discouraged.
