I was speaking to a professional medal/badge maker and he is considering making a replica G.A.R. badge for reenactors and living historians to wear. It would be identical to the original on the front and blank on the back (except clearly marked there as a replica) and would have no post officer insignia.
He says that he'd need to sell at least 100 for $35 each (or maybe less) plus shipping to make it worth his investment. So I'm trying to help him measure the potential market.
I realize that you can buy an original for about $150+ ... or less if it has a bad ribbon but then you have to buy a replica ribbon. I have an original in very good condition that I paid about $200 for but I'd be afraid to lose it if I wore it in a parade, etc.
Please let me know whether you think that there'd be a market for it. Thanks.
