Atkinson Common tablets to be rededicated Saturday

NEWBURYPORT — A century ago, hundreds of Newburyporters gathered at Atkinson Common to dedicate a memorial to the 1,500 city men who served in the Civil War. On Saturday, a new generation of Newburyporters will rededicate the restored tablet memorial, an event that will include some interesting links to the past and some modern-day fun.
About 500 people are expected to attend the "Tablet Day" event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Atkinson Park, located at what's locally known as "Three Roads" — the junction of High Street with Storey Avenue, Ferry Road and Moseley Avenue. The highlight of the day will be a rededication of the tablets containing the names of Newburyporters who served in the war. That ceremony will kick off at 12:30 p.m.
"We want to follow some of the format as close as possible to the 1913 ceremony," said Jennifer Collins of the Belleville Improvement Society, which has played a pivotal role in the park's restoration.
Among those who will be attending are a half dozen or so descendants of the six boys and six girls who, during the 1913 ceremony, pulled the chords to unveil the tablets.
Bill Hallett, a Newburyporter who has written a book on Newburyport in the Civil War, set about tracking them down. After a story appeared in The Daily News asking for descendants to contact Hallett, he said his phone started ringing.
"People who called me were very excited about it," he said. "Everyone wanted to tell me about their ancestor."
Hallett will give a short speech at the dedication, as will state Sen. Kathleen O'Connor Ives, state Rep. Michael Costello and Veterans Agent Kevin Hunt. Mayor Donna Holaday will also give a speech— the same one read by Newburyport Mayor Hiram Landford at the original 1913 dedication.
