Reid and Cockrell

For starters, my Mom's maiden name is Cockrell. We know that Gen. Francis M. Cockrell is a direct ancestor and that several other Cockrells are burried at Vicksburg. Also, I know there were Reids that served on both sides. One I suspect is a James Franklin Reid who was in Co. I, 9th Texas. I have seen others listed in Union, but have been unable to make any connection so far.
Both sides originate from Virginia in the late 1700s, moving from there to Missouri. Cockrells moving sometime in 1820 - 1830s; the Reids sometime in the late 1800s, and from there to Oklahoma in the 1920s.
Any help would be appreciated.

Soldiers and Sailors lists 233 Cockrells, Ancestry.com lists 166 Cockrells

Soldiers and Sailors lists 2,582 Reids, Ancestry.com lists 1,609 Reids

Too bad these are common names, I wouldn't want to sort thru all that, but if you've got first names you can narrow it down.
