Reenactor injured.....

Sounds like he could also have been hit by a wad.
They found the man had been struck by an unknown type of projectile from an artificial firearm, but Brito-Gonzalez said it was not believed to be a live round. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

So what exactly is an "artificial firearm " ?

I double-dog-dare you to reach out to the reporter and ask him, then post his response(s) here.

99.9 percent of the time they do deal with it, those types of injuries are extremely rare considering the number of people who've participated in events over the years. Now out of shape guys passing out when it gets over 80 degrees is a whole other story.
Yup hated dealing with the 75 year old plus instant heat casualty every event. Leave him where he dropped as they did back then, after all we are reenacting history! I quit before hitting 50 so not to be that guy.

I'm in the 50+ club now but I'm not ready to give up on the hobby I love quite yet. It's my motivation to stay in somewhat decent shape so I'm not that guy and I love sharing what I've learned over the years with new people to the hobby and always learning new things myself. I'll keep at it till I am that guy, hopefully not for a while yet.

I was and am still in good shape but Running around in full wool in 95 degree heat can lead to problems as we age. Be careful and have fun!

I remember when I reenacted, we used to do an event at Monmouth Battlefield in New Jersey. One year (1998, IIRC) a reenactor got shot in the head. Turns out the projectile was a tompion (wooden plug) that someone had forgotten in their musket after the tactical that morning and apparently fielded without going through a safety check. The tompion fractured the guys skull but thankfully didn't penetrate his brain, but the reenactor needed intense physical therapy to recover
The Monmouth incident, as I recall, was a tompion that pierced the side of a drum while the boy was on the field for a battle reenactment. It was not a personal injury - but it sure could have been!

I believe that was another event. It may have been Monmouth but years later. I remember the Civil War News (a newspaper which covered a lot of reenactments) did stories on both events. I don't believe the two incidents occurred at the same event.

An "artificial firearm" is what you get when your gun no longer works like it used to and a surgeon has to replace it.
Re-enactments are always a delicate balance and I can thankfully say the I have never be to or been involved with a re-enactment where there was an accident.
It sounds like the "organ" tried to reject the donor.

There was also another incident that happened the same year as Monmouth. It was at Allaire State Park. A screwdriver was being used to remove a percussion cap from a pistol cylinder that had a misfired round. The reenactor had his thumb in front of the chamber and a spark from prying the cap off ignited the round and took off part of his thumb. I was at both of these events. Each incident could have been avoided if proper safety protocol and/or common sense was followed.
