"Red Strings"

While reading "The Petersburg Campaign Volume II" by Ed Bearss and Bryce Suderow, I came across a term I had never seen before...."Red Strings".

During the attack on Fort Steadman, some Confederates tied red strings to their arms to indicate to the Union troops their willingness to surrender if confronted. Does anyone know of any other references to the "Red Strings"?
