As I study and learn more, cannot help but notice the same site names are found at several battlefields.

Example- I've heard of the Slaughter Pen at Gettysburg, and now know that Stones River had a Slaughter Pen. I'm pretty certain I just read of a location at Perryville also called the Slaughter Pen.

Both Perryville and Gettysburg have a Seminary Ridge.

Some sites may have a general descriptive name like "the Wheatfield" or "the Sunken Road"- and easy to see why one may find the same name at multiple fields.

Just curious what might be the most common name….. let's hear 'em. So far, I'm seeing Slaughter Pen at three locations.

But I'm thinking there is only one Maryes Heights 😉

What readily comes to mind here are the various 'Sunken Roads'. Can recall the 'Sunken Road' (or 'Hornets Nest') at Shiloh, the 'Sunken Road' at Antietam and the 'Sunken Road' at Federicksburg.

Could it be the names ascribed were given by the same newspaper reporters that were covering the various battles?
I believe the two Roundtops at Gettysburg were referred to in some after battle reports by various names, including Sugar Loaf Mountain. I wonder if it was the newspaper reporters that were responsible for our knowing them as Big and Little Roundtop because they thought those names were more catchy?
