May 20th is the traditional day to commemorate Emancipation in Florida, particularly in Tallahassee. Search google and you'll find the account in many articles and books that on May 20, 1865, Major General Edwin McCook raised the US flag over the Florida state house where he read the Emancipation Proclamation. Only problem is that the details of this particular story may not be true. McCook and his troopers first entered Tallahassee, accepted the surrender of Gen. Sam Jones and raised the US flag on May 10, 1865. Various declarations of emancipation were made during several different days in mid and late May, including possibly May 20th. In any event, May 20th has prevailed as the day of Emancipation in the Sunshine State. Celebrate liberty!
