Rebel Yell

They had an interesting story on NPR yesterday on the Rebel yell. They played some records of elderly confederate vets making the yell, a falsetto yip yip yip that was weird. To get the idea of what a charging regiment might have sounded like, they looped the yell again and again, making it sound like hundreds of men.

It was a poor approximation the radio people now(and back in the 1930s the orginial vets admitted) of the actual yell.

The grandson of one of the veterans recorded in the 1930s is still alive. He recalled his grandfather doing the yell when he was a kid. When the grandson fought in Italy in WWII, he heard a sound just like it: the "Moaning Minnie" a German shell!
