I like the cigar. Don't see them often in portrait photos like this. Do see them more often in pics of officers in the field.

I think the normal enlisted man smoked a pipe. Cigars were more costly and therefore used by officers in general. This was told to me years ago when I started in the reenacting hobby. BTW, cigarettes were post war.
