Rear Sight Replacement?

Hello All,

I'm curious as to thoughts of replacing a rear sight to a Tower Enfield rifle. My understanding is that these were soldered to the barrel and could be dislodged. Is it worth adding a rear sight once the original has been lost? If so, are original rear sights even available? I have seen reproductions for sale but I would prefer to stick with an original if they can be found. I appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks for the replies. Another newbie question as far as the sights go. Were the ladder sights that are marked to 10 ever used in the Civil War? My limited understanding is that they only went to 8.

Thanks.

You can't find proper original sights on the loose except by rare accident. You might as a well buy a complete gun with rear sight still in place!!!

The original sights were silver-soldered onto the barrel. IF you find a sight, you will need to find someone who can solder it onto the barrel and who KNOWS HOW to do it professionally. I've seen several over the years that weren't done right and it was obvious.

I looked for a rear sight for my Enfield for about 5 years. The few (and I mean few) that I ever saw were running for about $200. Maybe @Jeff in Ohio is right about selling the one you have and getting one with a rear sight already on it.
