Great hike today with Ranger Troy Harman.

We hiked from the Visitor's Center to the top of Powers Hill and then over to Spangler Meadow. I half expected to see @pamc153PA on this hike considering the subject. Troy did a great job integrating what was happening on Powers Hill with the rest of the battle. The initial deployment was to set up Powers Hill as a secondary fallback position in the event the confederates were successful in breaching the Federal position on Cemetery Hill and forcing a retreat from there. It was also used to cover the movement of the V Corps and the XII Corps from the Wolf Hill area. Finally, it was a significant artillery platform in the battle for Culp's Hill.

Oh, I didn't know about it, darn! Actually, I was just there yesterday, by myself, no Troy H.

Al, did he mention anything about the undergrowth being all brown on the face of the hill toward Baltimore Pike? It looks like they used herbicide--which is fine with me, since it means all that work clearing it a few years ago doesn't go to waste. It was starting to grow back again really thickly last year.

Now if they would only do that in the Slaughter Pen.

He didn't mention that. He did say that the Baltimore Pike side of the hill was logged for McAllister Mills, which is why there were no trees on that side, while the west side of the hill remained wooded. That meant that the artillery had to be taken up the east side of the hill.

Here's the rest of the schedule.

They haven't posted this year's battle walk schedule yet. Should be coming up pretty soon, though.
