Railroad personnel

How would I research which line an ancestor worked for. My great great uncle Daniel Herndon worked for a railroad during the civil war
Some of the large railroads have web sites and even fan clubs. Sometimes they have old rosters, but not often.

Might could help more if we knew the name of the railroad, or at least when and where he worked for one.

It is a discovery process that should be motivating for you. Do you know the capacity of his work involvement and possibly the longevity of his service? Welcome to the Railroads and Steam Locomotive Forum. It will be a pleasure to hear more.
Lubliner.

Lubliner is correct

From age four to ten, I spent many shifts in the Hardman Tower with my father who was a telegrapher for the B&O; my father was a military telegrapher with the Army Air Corps during WWII . My Grandfather's career was also at Harman Tower; my grandfather was a military telegrapher with the Army Air Corps during WWI. My Great-Great Grandfather was the first family operator. Private William H. Helm was the Grandson of Major William Helm, my Revolutionary War Patriot.

Private William H. Helm, Infantry Attached to Regiment organized for railroad guard duty and served on line of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad by detachments, January, 1863.

Private Helm was captured near Cumberland, MD., August 1, 1864; imprisoned Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina and died Jan 12, 1865 (starvation.) In February 1865, Union prisoners at Salisbury were freed.

You have just answered one of my previous questions on a different thread concerning the rank of Private William Helm. I also mentioned the raid that captured General Kelley there, but I am thinking it occurred in the winter of '65. Possibly a different raid.
