Who can name the first iron-clad to serve in the Pacific? Can you tell us of her fate in the Pacific Squadron?

I believe the first Pacific ironclad was USS Camanche. She was sold after decommissioning and became a collier for other ships.

Very good.

Poor thing has the unique distinction of having sunk before she was re - assembled on arrival ,as the ship carrying her parts sank .

She has to be the only ship I know of that sank before she sailed. But I am guessing she sort of sailed prior to being dis-assembled and shipped, or am I wrong?

I don't think she was ever completely assembled prior to shipment to the West Coast. (Parts of her were used to fix other monitors including Weehawken, incidentally, since her West Coast posting was of a lower priority than the combat assignments of other ironclads...)
