It seems like I seen it somewhere before but was there are reason that the colors NBF flew was missing the center star?

There's some controversy over why Forrest used this flag even after he was ordered to use the next one after. Polk also continued to use it because he believed Kentucky had given him the cold shoulder - can't imagine why he'd think that! But, Forrest was said to have used it because he omitted Georgia from the Confederacy. (Guess he should have let Sherman in on that secret...)

That's quite possible! However, the sash appears to be a trophy. Who he got it off of or why he kept it is a mystery - if that's the explanation, that is! (Sure wish THAT GUY hadn't been such a clam about some things...)

Really. If only you, Larry or lil' old me had been around to interview him. :)

Just reminds me a little of a Simpsons episode where Grampa's putting up a US flag... Marge says, "There are only 49 stars on that flag!" and Grampa responds, "I'll be dead in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah!" Gotta love non sequiter humor.

I still sort of like "because his enemies knew whose it was." Nothing like putting on a good "skeer."

Reminds me of a story about the first Gulf War, "Desert Storm". We spent some time being able to get armored division(s) out of Germany, they weren't really needed then because the USSR had collapsed. But the Quartermaster just couldn't seem to get the troops from Europe the "Chocolate Chip" desert camo uniforms to replace the "forest green camos they used in Europe.

Finally, a week before the invasion, the general in charge of those divisions from Europe finally had enough. He told his officers to forget about getting the chocolate chip camos for their men. He arranged for the propoganda radio broadcasts being beemed to the units across from them something to this effect: "When you see the American armored units in their green uniforms, you will know that you are facing the best troops America has. These were the troops who were trained to take on the best of the Soviet armored units in Europe. Now they are going to fight you. Your only hope is to surrender quickly".

Found a wee little bit supporting the idea it meant Forrest himself was on the field. It appears, according to his premier biographer Wyeth, that only the escort used the 12 star flag. Morton's battle flag, for instance, has the 13 stars. Now, if Forrest's escort was the only one to use the 12 star flag, then that might well be the meaning - they were the elites and they always contained the general. Interesting!
