Private Richard R Smyth or Smith

Hello I'm new here and I've been struggling to see if my ancestor actually saw combat in the war he joined the 4th Alabama Calvary battalion (Love's) he joined in 1863 his name is Richard R Smyth or Smith He's joined in Pike County but is from Rose Hill Alabama if find any info such as pictures or anything let me know. he 41 years old when he joined with thanks from young student of history. (Btw I basically posted the same thing to the wrong forum so I apologize if it seems like reposting )
