Preston Brooks

How many people feel what Preston Brooks did to Sumner was appropriate?

If you're not familiar with what happened see link:

Of course not. The deed was barbaric, and to defend it would be outrageous.
On the other hand it is true that he lived in a time and society in which some elements of barbarism were tolerated, even encouraged. But, in the general tenor of 19th century life, his act was criminal and vile.

I would explain why Preston Brooks used a cane in the first place, but that require mentioning you-know-who.

Is anyone here going to defend the actions of brooks

Think the idea there was that Brooks had decided Sumner wasn't a gentleman and therefore it was proper to wallop the daylights out of him as if he was just a nobody. Guess it was penciled in on page 22 of Brooks' copy of the Southern Code of Honor.
