Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, was born on this day in 1833, in North Bend, Ohio. He came from a prominent Virginia family and was the grandson of U.S. President William Henry Harrison. Harrison served in the American Civil War as a Colonel and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1865. Harrison fought in the Atlanta Campaign with fellow Ohioan, Major General William T. Sherman. Harrison was elected to the presidency in 1888. Harrison died at his home in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 13, 1901.

It's not very well known that Benjamin Harrison started the first national forests (a role usually assigned to Teddy Roosevelt).

Interestingly, his grandson, William Henry Harrison, served as Wyoming's lone congressman for many years, back when I was in high school and college.

Happy Birthday, Ben.

He was involved in the answer to a sports trivia question I heard some time back. The question asked for the names of four colleges, each of which was the alma mater of a U. S. President and at least one Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

The answer is: the University of Michigan (Jerry Ford and Tom Brady), the U. S. Naval Academy (Jimmy Carter and Roger Staubach), Stanford University (Herbert Hoover, Jim Plunkett, and John Elway), and Miami University (Benjamin Harrison and Ben Roethlisberger.)

Great trivia question!

My wife and I are going to visit his home and grave site in Indianapolis, Indiana in two weeks.

Bill
