"Coan was a leader in the 27th, serving as a lieutenant. In a seven-day battle near Richmond, Coan ate an oyster. He was stricken with typhoid and would die in a Washington hospital in the fall of 1862. His brother, Ezra Titus Coan, was an Albion merchant who later served as county treasurer."
