Preparing, Handling, and Loading Naval Hot-Shot

I read something the other day that mentioned the CSS Virginia firing hot-shot into the USS Cumberland during the Battle of Hampton Roads. It had me thinking how difficult hot-shot must have been to work with.

Earlier in my career, I was a welder / structural fitter. I've spent a lot of time around red hot steel. I burned my hands on a trailer my dad was working on when I was 3 yrs old.

I imagine that handling a 50 lbs cannon ball that is red hot, in close proximity to black powder, must have been a daunting task.

Are there any particular naval experts here that can elaborate on the subject?

I know a little of it, though hot shot was relatively rare for shipboard use. (In fact, I don't know of any other examples than the Virginia in the Civil War navies, offhand.)

A wet wad was pushed down, I believe on top of the dry wad atop the powder, to keep the shot from touching the piece off prematurely.

I don't know precisely how hot they made the hot-shot. They had to be hot enough to serve as incendiaries, but not so hot that the shot was actually malleable, which would present a number of problems in manipulating and firing it; so any temperature anywhere close to melting point would have been right out (not to mention wholly impractical, since a ship's no place for a blast furnace).
 
They would take a solid shot and put it into an oven until it was red hot, they would then put it into what amounted to a two handled iron basket and take it to the gun. Before they placed it into the gun, they had to place layers of wet rags or wet wadding into the bore to prevent the red hot ball from igniting the powder charge. Once it was in, it was fired asap and hopefully the aim was good enough to hit the wooden ship and set it on fire. There were also "hotshot" ovens in coastal forts for the same purpose. By the time of the Civil War, this technology was pretty much out of date as the ships became more iron than wood and mainly because this whole "hotshot" idea was about as risky to the gun crews and ships that were doing the firing as it was to the ships that were being fired at. There was also the idea of using "hotshots" in land artillery as the James family of projectiles had a stand for placing a hot 12# ball into a cannon and firing it at land targets.

Virginia's the only example I can think of either. I've read that only a couple of her ten guns were equipped for firing hot shot, not sure what that entails; I've always understood hot shot to be a standard solid iron shot in a standard gun. As noted it was mainly for shore batteries to use against wooden ships, which were still the vast majority in the ACW.

In the mid-1800s ships began to be armor-plated or built entirely of iron, while explosive shells provided an alternate, easier, and safer means of increasing the damage inflicted, so hot-shot's days were numbered.

IIRC, in this case it meant that those two guns were provided with the special equipment needed (as with the handling baskets) and were located close to the furnace; I don't think there was anything special about the pieces themselves.
 
I do not believe that any ship would have the heating capacity to heat a cannon ball up anywhere near molten. Even red hot.

Imagine the 9.87" thickness of a solid shot cannonball on a 10" Columbiad. Now imagine the 1" maximum thickness of the boilers & furnaces that are contained the heat needed to heat the shot.

Cast Iron has a melting point of 2,200 degrees F
Modern Steel has a melting point of 2,500 degrees F. The "steel" & wrought iron in the ACW bore little resemblance on a molecular level to what we call carbon steel today.

Most metals begin to glow red at 950 degrees F

Logic tells me that, it is doubtful that the cannonball could even approach an even temp of 950 with burning up the iron oven in was heating in. It'd have to be a brick blast furnace.

Even then, I've heated 4" think steel plate to 600 - 700 degrees before with a torch & ceramic heat blankets, and to get an even reading on both sides and feel confident that it was properly heated in the center.... that was a low & slow heating process. We're talking an hour in some cases.

I'm rambling and going off topic... My apologies.
 
There is a "hot shot" furnace at Ft.Morgan on Mobile Bay. I'm sure it was built when the original fort was constructed before the Civil War. It was for firing on wooden ships. I'm of the opinion it would have been marginally effective against wood hulls and cloth sails.
 
Logically, how hot d'ya think an open coal furnace could heat a 9" solid shot? Call it 90 pounds of weight for the shot...
I'd say 600 - 700 degrees. That's still hot enough to start a fire, I'd think.

I had an old cast iron wood stove once, and 2 different times, I swear the sides had a dull glow on them. It scared me enough to open the damper and the doors to cool it off.

That was also wood and 1/2" cast iron.

I've made an ax head glow bright in a bond fire.

Those two examples are not exactly apples and apples with a 90# cast iron ball.
 
I don't know where that dude got the cannon ball, but when I first saw what he was doing, my first reaction was "I hope that is not full of black powder.." I reckon it'd have a blast cap somewhere on it, but still.... We've all heard about relics on the mantle blowing up the living room.

Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.
As an adult, he crisscrossed the Virginia countryside in search of wartime relics — weapons, battle flags, even artillery shells buried in the red clay. He sometimes put on diving gear to feel for treasures hidden in the black muck of river bottoms.
But in February, White's hobby cost him his life: A cannonball he was restoring exploded, killing him in his driveway.
More than 140 years after Lee surrendered to Grant, the cannonball was still powerful enough to send a chunk of shrapnel through the front porch of a house a quarter-mile from White's home in this leafy Richmond suburb.
White's death shook the close-knit fraternity of relic collectors and raised concerns about the dangers of other Civil War munitions that lay buried beneath old battlefields. Explosives experts said the fatal blast defied extraordinary odds.
"You can't drop these things on the ground and make them go off," said retired Col. John F. Biemeck, formerly of the Army Ordnance Corps.
White, 53, was one of thousands of hobbyists who comb former battlegrounds for artifacts using metal detectors, pickaxes, shovels and trowels.
"There just aren't many areas in the South in which battlefields aren't located. They're literally under your feet," said Harry Ridgeway, a former relic hunter who has amassed a vast collection. "It's just a huge thrill to pull even a mundane relic out of the ground."
After growing up in Petersburg, White went to college, served on his local police force, then worked for 25 years as a deliveryman for UPS. He retired in 1998 and devoted most of his time to relic hunting.
He was an avid reader, a Civil War raconteur and an amateur historian who watched History Channel programs over and over, to the mild annoyance of his wife.
"I used to laugh at him and say, 'Why do you watch this? You know how it turned out. It's not going to be any different,"' Brenda White said.
She didn't share her husband's devotion, but she was understanding of his interest.
"True relic hunters who have this passion, they don't live that way vicariously, like if you were a sports fanatic," she said. "Finding a treasure is their touchdown, even if it's two, three bullets."
Union and Confederate troops lobbed an estimated 1.5 million artillery shells and cannonballs at each other from 1861 to 1865. As many as one in five were duds.
Some of the weapons remain buried in the ground or river bottoms. In late March, a 44-pound, 8-inch mortar shell was uncovered at Petersburg National Battlefield, the site of an epic 292-day battle. The shell was taken to the city landfill and detonated.
Black powder provided the destructive force for cannonballs and artillery shells. The combination of sulfur, potassium nitrate and finely ground charcoal requires a high temperature — 572 degrees Fahrenheit — and friction to ignite.
White estimated he had worked on about 1,600 shells for collectors and museums. On the day he died, he had 18 cannonballs lined up in his driveway to restore.
White's efforts seldom raised safety concerns. His wife and son Travis sometimes stood in the driveway as he worked.
"Sam knew his stuff, no doubt about it," said Jimmy Blankenship, historian-curator at the Petersburg battleground. "He did know Civil War ordnance."
An investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will not be complete until the end of May, but police who responded to the blast and examined shrapnel concluded that it came from a Civil War explosive.
Experts suspect White was killed while trying to disarm a 9-inch, 75-pound naval cannonball, a particularly potent explosive with a more complex fuse and many times the destructive power of those used by infantry artillery.
Biemeck and Peter George, co-author of a book on Civil War ordnance, believe White was using either a drill or a grinder attached to a drill to remove grit from the cannonball, causing a shower of sparks.
Because of the fuse design, it may have appeared as though the weapon's powder had already been removed, leading even a veteran like White to conclude mistakenly that the ball was inert.
The weapon also had to be waterproof because it was designed to skip over the water at 600 mph to strike at the waterline of an enemy ship. The protection against moisture meant the ball could have remained potent longer than an infantry shell.
Brenda White is convinced her husband was working on a flawed cannonball, and no amount of caution could have prevented his death.
"He had already disarmed the shell," she said. "From what I was told, there was absolutely nothing he had done wrong, that there was a manufacturing defect that no one would have known was there."
After White's death, about two dozen homes were evacuated for two days while explosives experts collected pieces from his collection and detonated them.
Today, there is little evidence of the Feb. 18 blast. The garage where White did most of his work is still crammed with his discoveries, many painstakingly restored and mounted. Rusted horseshoes are piled high in the crook of a small tree.
White's digging partner, Fred Lange, hasn't had the heart to return to his relic hunting.
"I truly miss him," Lange said. "Not a day that goes by that I don't think of him."

yupper... referred to as ricochet fire, basically "bowling" the shot or shell at the enemy. It was both a way to extend the range a bit and to increase the likelihood of a hull or waterline hit. It could only be done reliably with smoothbores, though; non-spherical projectiles from rifled guns tended to take off at unpredictable angles.

Reports stated that Sam was cleaning a ball that had been a water recovery with a wire brush attachment in an electric drill when he hit a watercap fuse that was not obvious because of the rust and sediment. Because of their design, these fuses are perhaps the most dangerous fuse to deal with in Civil War ordinance, also it has always been debated as to whether or not the ball had already been drilled and the powder removed. Pieces of the cannonball hit residences several hundred yards away. Several years after this incident, another collector-Lawrence Christopher of Dalton Georgia was seriously injured when a 30# Parrot Shell that he was cleaning exploded. This hit particularly close to home as I had been at Lawrence's home the day before picking up a shell and he showed me the Parrot shell that later exploded. Cleaning and defusing these balls/shells are best left to the experts who defuse them remotely. That reminds me of the British blowing up that dam in WW2 with a barrel bomb. They skipped it across the water from a low flying bomber, and had it spinning counter to the direction it was moving, causing it to skip nicely.

I saw it on TV.... pretty cool.
