Precursor to the Boer War?

Were any of the cavalry tactics, or commanders in general somewhat similar to the Boers in the Boer War? The word commando began from these Boer riders, who did nothing but hit and run tactics, slept in the saddle and lived off of the land.

Was Forrest's style considered similar or was he more orchestrated in his tactics?
 
If you study history long enough, you'll learn that nothing is really ever new. Hit & Run was used by the cavalry in Eurasia/Russian Steppes. Bushwhacking (concealed gunmen) goes back to the Ottomans v. Christians era. Trench warfare started before Vauban (heck, Julio Cesare did it at Alesia). Spies were used by Moses.

No nothing new in insurgency warfare, or partisan warfare but in the ACW comparisons to the Boer the Trans-miss and East Tennessee would be close in the match.
