Here is a Flintlock musket made by Harpers Ferry 1836 converted to a Blunderbuss
I know these weapons where used more by civilians then officially by the army but i thought to post it here for reference.

Is the caliber, or bore, still .69 beyond the flair or is that a whole new barrel? Great for riding shotgun on a coach, sweeping the decks of boarders, taking out a couple charging horsemen or scaring the bejesus out of things that go bump in the night.

The folks in the blackpowder community tend to think the flared muzzle was to facilitate loading; especially from a bouncing stagecoach. The British Army kept some at hand to deter would be mutineers.

That is interesting, but unusual at best. I wonder why it was created. A lot different than a shotgun, was it made to fill a gap or as a potential weapon of war.
