And here:

you can find the order of battle for the Battle of Prairie Grove. Interestingly, it includes regimental strengths, down to the individual man!

My question is where do these numbers come from? Shea's "Fields of Blood" book is listed as the reference, but I have that book, and nowhere in that book can I find those specific numbers. Rough estimates yes, and not for every unit like we have in the Wikipedia articles.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the ORs which have both Union and Confederate offical correspondence.
Also try Dyers Compendium which lists ever regiment in the Civil War. The caveat is Dyers doesn't give troop strength for a particular regiment at battle.
Based on my readings a regiment is rather lucky to be at two thirds full strength at time of battle. Both sides had tremendous problems with disease, desertion and men recovering from wounds.

Major caveat on the ORs. It used to be easy to read them online before they for what ever reason got stupid and made it more difficult to access. Maybe start a new thread how to navigate and find information from the ORs.
