This weekend, having been a spectator of this event and taken around 90 photos and 6 videos, I suspect that there will be only a couple of dozen that I will be pleased with. After a

review, I am hoping to post several of my favorite pix on December 7 (actual battle date December 7th and 8th). This informational sign caught my eye as it was right at the spectator viewing area.

I've visited Prairie Grove site couple of times in past, this was my first time to attend a reenactment there I wasn't aware of Cane Hill until today having taken a seriously long time in the Hindman visitor Center. I shall visit Cane Hill very soon, I think.
Well, Cane Hill is a very interesting place to visit with the battlefield pretty much like it was in 1862 more or less. However...

The only signage you'll find is older stuff put up by the State on the 150th, pretty worn and not taken care of as of 2019, and in my experience the imbeciles that run the place, (a private entity started and funded by someone from here in Texas as I understand it), seemingly have ZERO regard for the battle's history other than acknowledging it happened, and they want nothing to do with commemorating or even remembering it at all. They prefer to focus on all other history of the town, which is a whole lot of nothing more or less outside of the usual small-town stuff that can be found everywhere. And seeing how they've bought up 80 percent of the town and preserved it, its outright ludicrous.

Other than that, utterly disgraceful to the soldiers who died there, and completely idiotic notion by those folks considering how unique that battle is compared to many, if not most battles in the war, which I would say would make them money if advertised right, they have done an excellent and commendable job preserving the town as it was in the 1890's to 1930's. Very great job and worth a visit.

Prairie Grove is a wonderful event, traditionally held as close to Dec. 7 as possible. As a result, it can also be an extremely cold event. Back in the 80's and 90's, when I reenacted with Holmes Brigade, we often formed the major part of the Union infantry. At my final event there, I served as commander of our company. According to the scenario, we were to attack up the hill driving the Confederates from the yard of the Borden House, then be forced back by a counter attack. As we fell back down the brushy slope, our hand-made silk banner stuck fast in a large thorn bush. My 1st sergeant and I turned back to free it, but the pursuing Johnnie's were on us with blood in their eyes! At the same moment our company turned back to protect the colors, and I have no doubt the flag would have been torn to pieces if calmer heads had not prevailed. It was a standing rule in our reenactments that no colors were ever physically captured. Their officers managed to calm them down and no blood was shed--except by those of us caught in the thorn bush; I still have the scars to prove it.

Prairie Grove Snapshots December 2022 (Sidebar: found out this morning that my daughter, her husband and family along with friends from their church went there on Saturday. I didn't mention that I was going since they've never expressed much interest in ACW history. Grandchildren are wanting to see the pix now, so perhaps I can get a chance to share some stories of their ancestors' experiences).
