Do most still exist as proper cemeteries or have most been lost over time?

It where paupers, unknown, or unclaimed bodies would be buried.
 
They're not as common as they once were but they exist. The cemetery where I volunteer has one although no burials are done there now. New York city has a really big one that I think is still used.
 
There was one in Petersburg, VA. My g grandfather was buried there in 1908. There were Confederate soldiers buried there, although most soldiers were buried at Blandford Cemetery. Today most of the land has been developed. Details can be found in "A Poorhouse Tale", by P. W. Fleming.
