Custer on reconstruction "As to trusting the negro of the southern states with the most sacred and responsible privilege-the right of suffrage-I should as soon think of elevating an Indian Chief to the Popedom of Rome" To Custer here was a clear example of the idealists not being aware of the reality. The blacks in Texas and Louisiana where he was stationed in 1865-66 were, according to his wife "the worst in the south". He told his father in law "All advocates of giving suffrage to the southern negro should visit these states and see for themselves" Northern newspaper accounts of the "industry and good conduct of the freedmen" were not true he said. He closed his letter with this prediction "I regard the solution of the negro problem as involving difficulty and requiring greater statesmanship then any political matter that has arisen in years"
In Aug 1866, other army regulars among them Alexander McD McCook, George Crook and Gordon Granger joined Custer on an attack on Radical Reconstruction and an appeal for a soldier and sailors convention.
