Postum is a roasted grain beverage. It is a popular as a coffee substitute.

It was created by C.W. Post in 1895. It is made with roasted wheat and molasses. It was made by Kraft's. It now made by Eliza's Quest Foods.

Postum is popular with certain religious groups, Mormons and Seventh Day Adventists. Many of them abstain from coffee.

It is similar to coffee substitutes made during Civil War. Reminds very much of Barley Coffee.

Recipe for Latte made from Postum.

3/4 cup of milk
3 tablespoons powdered milk
1 tablespoon Postum
sweeten to taste
Mix in Blender. Heat and serve.

I forgot about Postum!
A Doctor in town (that we know socially, as opposed to giving it to me for "medicinal" purposes) gave me a jar of something called "Cafix" (it is akin to "instant coffee"). It has Roasted Barley, Rye, Chicory and Sugar Beets listed as ingrdients! I laughed and said that people were using these ingredients as a replacement for coffee for 200 years!
I have not tried it, so I cannot, as yet, vouch for it's taste, quality or potency!

Viewed the current ingredients for this product on the packaging label.

Wonder if the type and/or mix of ingredients changed much since the original 1895 formula. The composition of many established products, like Coca-Cola (since 1886), changed through time.
