This strikes me as really interesting-
I just read that a group of citizens including Horace Greeley and Gerrit Smith of the Secret Six , posted the $100,000 bail to release Jefferson Davis from prison.

The source for this is Strode, Hudson (1955). Jefferson Davis, Volume I: American Patriot. New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company.

Does anyone have any details on this and what the motivation would be for Greeley and Smith to do anything for Davis?

at least if they kept him in jail we wouldn't have to waste our time on his horrible book. I was never so bored in my life as reading his explanation of the war. It should have been fairytales and other lies.

Emphasis mine.
However after the war Jefferson Davis wrote what is probably the longest most turgid belabored 1,200-page defense of a failed political revolution in the history of language 1279 pages is his memoir entitled the rise and fall of the Confederate government and by the time he wrote that or published it in 1882 he was arguing everywhere on storied famous legendary tours of the south the war had absolutely nothing to do with slavery.
