It was a Trans-Mississippi Christmas for me! I added the following to my library:

When The Wolf Came
The Two Civil War Battles of Newtonia
Thunder Across the Swamp
Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas Border

How 'bout you all?

THAT is a very Merry Christmas!

I got John Bell Hood by Stephan Hood
Corinth 1862
Confederate Generals of the Western Theater Vol 1

Plus some WWII Eastern Front/Pacific Theater books!

These aren't Christmas gifts I got but they are some interesting videos I got this year, mostly from thrift stores and all for under $20.

I got No Retreat From Destiny: The Battle That Rescued Washington on eBay for around $6 including shipping. I'm not sure why, but I've seen this movie advertised online for $60 and a lot more. I didn't expect this film to be great (and it wasn't) but it includes the battle of Fort Stevens and I grew up a long city block away from the remains of the fort, so it meant a lot to add this one to my collection.

I'm still watching John Adams. It's been very good. I wish HBO would do a 10-part Civil War series.

Hi Chattahooch33, and Merry Christmas!
Yes, I've heard about To Appomattox! before and from the looks of things, I'm extremely disappointed. The stories of the characters that are supposed to be in that miniseries (Grant; Lee; Sherman; Forrest; Jackson; Varina Davis, Julia Dent Grant, etc) are, of course, very valuable and I'm sure I would enjoy watching them. But I find it very sad that there is no mention of any African-Americans in the cast, I just have to say this. A Civil War miniseries with another great minimization of slavery, or even free Blacks, is just going to be Gods & Generals all over again.

I will probably never get my wish but my vision for a great Civil War miniseries is a 10-14 part program with stories of characters from a Northern, Southern, slave, free Black, Border State, immigrant, civilian perspective. The stories of each episode would be based on real people. Each episode would be independent of the others, as opposed to a running story.

A merry Christmas to you as well!

I know nothing about this series, but I assume\hope it is a combat series a la Band of Brothers, The Pacific, etc. If that is the case unless they show Petersburg and the USCT (which would be awesome) I don't see the need to inject slavery into it. That may sound a bit harsh and it isn't supposed to be. Its like the movie Gettysburg. I don't know of any black there free or slave being in or around the battle so there was none in the movie except the "runaway" the 20th Maine found which seemed a desperate attempt to include such a thing. I am sure it will be discussed by the characters. I also think in this day and age there is plenty of coverage for all aspects of the war without each work having to include them all.
I really hope this doesn't start a debate. I'm not up for it tonight.

I guess this is kind of what I'm talking about. I enjoyed Gettysburg but it left out an entire chapter of the Gettysburg campaign. And there was some Black militia in Pennsylvania that faced Confederate soldiers before the battle.

I'm not saying Blacks have to be be included like it's some sort of Civil Rights mandate. But a story without them or having them only in the background or something would be disappointing to me.

But if it's a series like Band of Brothers and it focuses on a specific combat unit, that might be different and more understandable to me. But it doesn't sound like this series is going to be like that.

Back on the subject ....... another CW item I got is a Google Chromecast that I'm hoping will allow me to go back and watch all of the great CSPAN programming. I had a thing with a Scarborough and William C Davis on my DVR until I went away for a week and it got overwritten by about a million America's Next Top Model episodes.

At this point I'm having issues with my older hardware..... a netbook that runs XP and a Kindle Fire from a couple generations ago.

Whoops.....I'm kinda getting off topic myself.

We take turns opening and since I ran out first I figured I got shorted a little. So.... I made up for that with the purchase of:

The Second Battle of Cabin Creek: Brilliant Victory

and

The Civil War in Louisiana: Military Activity (Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Series in Louisiana History)

......also I got a gift certificate from Google Play that I figure I can turn into some civil war media. Any suggestions???

I got to spend the day with my wife, my daughter, and my future son-in-law. That was haul enough...and almost made up for also having to spend the day with my wife's sister-in-law and mother.

Oh I forgot I also got some period scented soap from the wife- Spearmint. I wonder if she is trying to send me a message?

I got my husband the book "Killing Jesus". He been wanting it. We gave each other clothes, as always need them this time of year.

Got some wonderful pears from Harry and David, as a gift from my cousin. They are delicious. Another cousin gave us Christmas Cookies from Harry and David. They were the best and we finished them off very fast.

I got 3 cookbooks to add to my collection.

Since my birthday is Dec. 27th, also got several gifts that day. My favorite is my charm bracelet from my husband.

The best gift of all was celebrating with my husband. We always drive to see the Holiday lights and have quiet supper at home.

On Jan 2nd we will be able to celebrate with our daughter and her family (two granddaughters). They live in Florida and will be for visit. Our son and his family (4 grandchildren) will come too. That will be special day for me. It be celebration for Christmas, my birthday and the New Year. I thank God for all the blessings in my life.

The major gift that I received was a Kindle Fire. I've already downloaded quite a few CW and WW2 books that I'll be reading over the next few weeks.

I also picked up Stephen Sears' book on Chancellorsville for $4 at a used book store on Christmas Eve.

got a 6 CD retrospective box set of Duane Allman's music. called Skydog The Duane Allman Retrospective.
Covers his early session work with the likes of King Curtis, Laura Lee, Otis Rush, and Ronnie Hawkins among others, not to mention his work with the Allman Brothers and Clapton. Haven't heard a lot of this before and it's great, the perfect gift for this lover of R&B and blues.

my only wish is that I could play like him

I got a night shirt. The real haul, though, was watching wild eyed, young children, mouths agape, behold the bounty Santa left for them. They'd left him a piece of pie and a glass of milk on Christmas Eve before they went to bed. Santa left them a thank you note and explained he hadn't time to finish either - too many children to visit yet, dontcha know!

Happy Holidays to all!
