Post war photo?

Great catch! There is one button visible, I'm sure you've done your best to blow it up? After the states were readmitted, citizens had the rights of all US and could wear whatever they desired. Based upon his cherub and portly appearance this photo might have been post admittance. Wasn't North Carolina readmitted quite quickly?
I think what mitigates against that idea is the presence of the backdrop, which as far as I know only appeared briefly, and probably during the war; other recognizable and more obvious officers/soldiers in this series don't look any "different" than other typically wartime subjects. As I recall, the lone pine tree backdrop is believed to have belonged to a North Carolina or possibly Petersburg, Va. photographer.

My apologies, I was thinking that he had converted his coat for civilian use, I see now that he most likely is in an active officer's role. What a great eye and catch, kudos to you!

I do not believe so, but he may have identified the picture in the past 30 years (since publication of Steve's book) or you might enlighten him on your hypothesis, either way a big win!
Package4,
I was able to contact the owner, however he no longer owns the photo. He did provide a lead to check with a Mr. Lewis Leigh Jr, so I will see if I can locate this gentleman. The search goes on. Regards and thanks again. Jonl51

Lewis is easy to locate, his son has a Website and is one of the leading ACW button experts. Www.civilwarbuttons.com. Unless I'm confusing the Leighs.

Package4,
Well, reached Mr. Leigh and had a great conversation, but he doesn't have the photo either. He did suggest a book, Confederate Faces, maybe worth a try.
Thanks. Jonl51
Hopefully you can find it in a library first, it's long out of print and used it's around $95. Maybe some members who have the book would look for you. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy.

I will try that first. If someone on the forum has the time and inclination to check their book that would be fantastic, meanwhile the research continues. Best regards. Jonl51
