This is a post Civil War cadet at Michigan Military Academy. I was sure when I first saw it that it was from after the Civil War. The MMA on the cap is a dead give away because Michigan Military Academy did not open until after the Civil War. The interesting item is the drum insignia on the sleeve.

This is an example of a photograph that might be confused with a Civil War image. So when someone says "gray Confederate Civil War uniform? better look closely.

another image of Michigan Military Academy cadets. The uniforms were made locally, and then by an Academy tailor. The Michigan History Museum has a nice collection of thier uniforms in stoarage.

Ames Company of Springfield Massachusetts made swords for them, later swords came from Henderson-Ames of Kalamazoo Michigan. Henderson-Ames of Kalamazoo Michigan probably made the caps and perhaps some of thier other headwear.

Suggested books.

The picture itself looks too clear to be CW era. Still a great picture.

Another image from the same academy that is again post Civil War. Almost looks like a West Point Cadet. The key here is the white shirt's collar is too tall for the Civil War and the cap is of post Civil War style.

What do the stripes signify?

I have wondered if the top image has been properly identitied. This is not a MMA uniform I have seen in other Academy photos.

I took the photo of the cabinet card of cadet William McGalliard (the lighting conditions were poor, so I didn't get a very clear shot). It was part of a collection of 19th century photos owned by a gentleman living in Dearborn. The entire collection now resides at the Museum of Michigan. I'm a collector and researcher of the old MMA, and have a large collection of photographs and artifacts from the academy.

I like you book. I sent you a PM (private message), this can be accessed by a drop down that will appear under you name in the upper right of the page.

I just posted this on another thread but I should have place it here. Cabinet photo by Wixson and Son Escanaba / Gladstone Mi. No name .

Do you think this is a militia uniform? At some point I hope to find time to research Michigan Post Civil War militia uniforms. I have done a reasonable amount of research on pre Civil War militia uniforms and had an article published in the Company of Military Historians & Collectors Journal (magazine) on the subject of Michigan Militia uniforms 1847 to 1865.

I should point out that my main interest in MMA is because I received my commission through the modern version of MMA run by the Michigan National Guard at Fort Custer Michigan. I know you all wonder how I ever graduated. Well we started with about 90 cadets and graduated 28 and for some unknown reason is slipped by pretending I was a ghost so I would not be noticed. Five years later my gradating class was down to just 6 officers and at ten years we were down to just three officers. I told both of my fellow classmates I not only shocked they had lasted ten years, but still in shock that somehow, with my help, they had managed to graduate in the first place.

I had to laugh because my brother-in-law only survived 15 minutes the first year he tried and was very proud that after another year of preparation he lasted a whole half hour on his second try.

lol Well Thank you for your service. ! And your brother inlaws 45 min. effort .

I am not sure the lad seems to be 14-16 yrs old and his sword is not the Cadet sword . Is there a Military school around Escanaba Mi. ?

Escanaba had a militia company but I have not heard of a military school there. I have not researched Escanaba for a military school. He does look young, however he could be 18 and old enough to join a militia

If you ever need it for your research let me know.
I have a little information/memorabilia from the Michigan Military Academy which was located in Menominee in the early 1930s.
