Possible Original Confederate Battle Flag

So at Christmas dinner my uncle said he has a real confederate flag from the civil war. I know that is a very bold claim but he told me I could have it. He is bringing it by my house Monday, so I will post pictures then. He described it has having yellow stuff around the border and being large and square. Also he said in was thick for a flag. Sounded to me like a flag from the army of northern Virginia. He said he got it in the 60s off the wall in his school. They had it framed and hung on the wall but he worked there so he didn't steal it or anything. If it's a real flag which is highly unlikely because of all the veteran flags from the late 1800s and early 1900s, what would the value be? Of course I will not sell it but keep it in my collection.

Don't blame you if its FREE. I have several UCV flags in my collection. Just remember that all post CW CS flags aren't necessarily veterans flags

Yeah I know but I think it will look cool with my collection. One thing for sure it's older than 1960. I guess we will all see what it is when I get it and post pics Monday.

A lot of stuff came in to being in the 1960's as the CW centennial was going on.

I talked to him an hour ago on the phone. He said it had wear and tear when he got it and had been in noxubee county high school since 1940. I know it's a small chance but what if it is real

Probably just a flag that the school had and nothing more.

Well, sometimes it's just fun to see what you are getting! And if it's not "real" you note that in the collection. I can't wait to see the pictures.

You need to hunt down a black light before you get the flag so we can check the age of the cloth.

I thought I had one because I used it on World War Two stuff but I guess I lost it or threw it away. I'll order one or see if Walmart has one

Even if this flag is not original to the War, the fact it may be dated to a 1940s school still makes it a historic item.
After all, that's an eighty plus year old flag.

Here's the flag it's 100% cotton I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty sure it's not civil war era though. It had been in noxubee county high school since the 40s and some how my great uncle got it. He took it with him every where he went and flew it at his dorm at ole miss in the 60s. It was then taken down by some students from up north but he proceeded some how to to get it back. It may not be rich in civil war history but it's sure rich with my family history and will be cherished by me. It's probably from the 30s or 40s. With this he also gave me a grape shot his uncle, my great great uncle, my great grandmothers brother recovered off the cairo. It's mounted on wood and he engraved 1862 to 1962 on it when he recovered it.

This flag looks in much better condition the 48 star flag on my (World War One Veteran) Grandfather's casket ... when he died during 1939.

The grommets and stitching appear to be almost identical.

But the colors of @Historycollector61's flag are much more vibrant.
Obviously his flag was better cared for over the years.

My Grandfater's flag from a year before, had been stored on the top shelf of an ancient farm house closet ...
until it was "rescued during the early 1990s"

Thanks for the reply my uncle took great care of it and flew it every where he went and took care of it. The flag is pretty old there is a label on it that says defiance. It's at least from 1940.
