I sometimes wondered just how much "loose change" a soldier carried and how he came about it. I was under the assumption coins were hard to come by and not just real common.
Probably not a lot the war created a "coin shortage". Sometime in 1862 the Federal government started making paper money in 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents. Creating to much paper money would cause inflation, so much as today the Feds just simply raised taxes.
