Please help with a Fold3 record

This Fold3 record appears to give two different reports of death. Either he was captured and hanged or he was killed in action...
Can someone please see if I'm missing something?
The soldier is Lafayette Elkins of Cannon County, TN; 5th Reg't Co. I Cavalry

Thanks in advance,
Dorothy
If you look at the bottom of Page 11 it says the entire Remark section was canceled with a line drawn through it. Whoever originally wrote the initial remark was wrong and it was corrected later on.

I'm fairly certain they when the cards were created they wrote everything that was on the original record, including the canceling of remarks. At least in my research that appears to be the case.
After I wrote my comment it occurred to me that the clerk likely did not work on an individual at a time so would not have seen this man's records together.

With all this said, it is confusing as to when it was canceled. The Report of the Adjutant General also states the hanging as cause of death, but I have found these lists full of errors before.

I'm not sure how much or what all info was being sought for this soldier, but it appears his name is Leroy Lafayette Elkins of Cannon County, TN. Married to Mary Caroline Young with a son of Thomas on his pension index record.
