"Plantation Row Slave Cabin Cooking, The Roots of Soul Food" is by Patricia B. Mitchell. The book explores the topic of slave food on southern plantations. It also touches on the overall lifestyle of slaves, discussing housing, amusements, religion and clothing.

It discusses the superior talents of black cooks, whether cooking for the slave cabin or for the mansion table. There are recipes for "Hog Maw Salad"," Limping Susan", "Plantation Shortcakes", and" Molasses Taffy", as well as others. According to Aron Carter, from the book, " De eats wuz good". Such eats were the roots of "soul food".
