Going through family 'boxes', i found a brass pinefire cartridge caper, made by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield, England. I think this is post-Civil War, but don't know enough about the subject to be sure. Great grandfather went through much of the war as a clerk at 4th Army, US, headquarters. His Navy 6 sidearm came down through the generations, but this item is a mystery.View attachment 551948

Hey @Nanabozo I am not an expert on these but I am not sure that it is for pinfire.

Here is an example of one here: https://cartridge-loading-tools.com/collection/uk-dixon-cap-1175nb/ and he calls it a cap expeller. So I think this is for removing the cap on a centerfire shotshell; so that you could then reload it.
Yes, Aaron (& thanks for the reply),
My 'research', on the internet only, is that this item is a cap expeller or ejector. The Paul Collis website, that deals with loading tools, has a picture of an item virtually identical to mine, and references an 1883 edition of the James Dixon & Sons catalogue, which makes me think this tool was made after the Civil War.
