Pickett's Flags

Here is a Virginia State "Blue Flag" carried by the 28th Virginia Infantry Regiment, which has the popular "Sic Semper Tryannis" (Which means "Thus to Tyrants" sometimes incorrectly believed to mean "Death to Tyrants").

Sometimes when Union Soldiers would ask what the motto on the flag stood for. The Virginia Confederate Soldiers would humurously tell the Yankees it meant "Get Your Foot off my Neck!"

Yes, I love to see these flags, too. I note that one of them is Kemper's flag. He's a durable and interesting man. Durable, because he survived a serious wound and went on to be governor of the state of Virginia. But, does anyone else here know that he had a brother named Frederick? Frederick founded Kemper's Family School in Boonville, Missouri in 1844. It later became Kemper Military School, and Professor Kemper was able to keep it going throughout the Civil War, which is just plain flat remarkable. Why? Because the whole town was occupied by Union regulars or militia or home guards at various times during the war. It was well known that Professor Kemper's brother was a Rebel General. Yet, his school never got shut down or burned out. It survived until the close of the 2002 school year. I can view the campus any time I walk out my front door.

...sorry for a bit of derailment to your thread. I got carried away when I saw General Kemper's flag! Go, Virginia!

Attention Moderators (@bdtex): This thread is really about flags, not General Pickett. Could it please be moved to the Uniforms & Relics Forum. Thank you.
