This supposed photo of Stuart appears every now and then in books. It came up in a thread during the past couple of years. I commented at that time that I felt it was not Stuart. (Which created a minor uproar amongst some). I remembered seeing it in some book ( I can't remember where) and the author commenting that it was spurious or something like that, anyway he indicated it was questionable as to authenticity. Most of the experts here thought it was him. At the risk of beating a dead horse, wondering if anyone can prove or disprove it?

I'm not a photo expert but I must say his epic beard is pretty tough to replicate and that looks pretty darn close!

No doubt it's JEB

Why do you think it isn't him?

You are absolutely correct old age is setting in

The face in this photo looks a lot like this one off the LOC site which is identified as Stuart (although they have no source and it does look like a drawing or a drawn-upon photo. The hairline, hairstyle, and ears look the same...and it even has the weird eyes (although the LOC person has eyebrows.

It's one or the other. I just don't recall, and I am at work and don't have my materials handy to check.

Thanks for your reply Eric. I'm not close to my sources either but I did recall JEB was close to Jackson to the point of giving him a brand new uniform so I thought it was a possibility that he wear a mourning band for him.
I appreciate your time Eric & I enjoy reading your books & posts on the forum.

The front of his uniform is different ( button arrangement) from the other "usual" photos of him. Also the "crossed sabres" on the front of his hat- looks like the kind of decoration on the hats kids wear on Halloween, or something you would see on a Hollywood B movie. He looks bug-eyed to me, not quite the same person through the eyes, although the hair I have no quarrel with. Plus the reason I believe it is a valid question is the reference (have not yet been able to track down) that I read, which questioned the authenticity.

That's old Jeb all right. Big time dandy he was for sure. I can only imagine what the likes of Stonewall and Longstreet thought when they had to deal with these precious types
