I have read that when he was killed at Kellys Ford that he wasn't even suppose to be there. He decided to go along but did not really have to be there. His artillery wasn't even involved in the affair. He was killed while participating in a calvary charge. His body was returned home and buried in the city cemetery in Jacksonville, AL. A monument was erected downtown in 1905. The range at Fort McClellan in nearby Anniston. AL was named in his honor thus: Pelham Range.

Pelham was nearby on leave when he heard gunfire and went to investigate. Being a tourist on a battlefield while the battle is in progress is not a very wise thing, as proven by the demise of a truly brave young man who made an unwise decision.
