Major john Pelham took a 12 pounnd Napoleon and a rifled blakely, and road out on to the feild on December 13th during the battle of Fredericksburg and open fired on the advancing union line. Moving from place to place several times dodgeing union artillery fire losing the the 12 pounder in the process, being told to withdraw only to say " I can hold my ground" finally forced off the field from low ammunition, the iron brigade commanded by Gen solomon meredith and pulling him off the field, and the oncoming 24th Michigan infantry. Pelham's fire did not do much damage but it did mortaly wound Brigade Gen. George Bayard. This event showed the bavery artillery men of the civil war, going into the mouth of danger in hopes to make some sort of difference to change the tides of the battle. Pelham would go to make more dareing actions such as the one at Fredericksburg only to be killed in action during the battle Culpeper courthouse. It is men like Pelham who make me sit back and think what difference they would have made if they had lived.

"it is glorious to see such courage in one so young" Gen. lee after Pelhem returned
