Visited the State Parks event at Locust Grove Cemetery East of St. Francisville, 1 mile north of LA 10, yesterday. 27 graves spanning 200 years. Locust Grove was a cotton plantation owned by Jefferson Davis' sister Anna and her husband. Jefferson Davis and his bride of 3 months, Sarah Knox Taylor went to visit, but came down with either Yellow Fever or Malaria. "Knoxie" was Zachary Taylor's daughter, and she died there at age 21. Davis obviously recovered. He rose from his sick bed upon hearing her singing her favorite song "Geensleeves" in her delirium, (more below)
and attended her until she passed. Eleazar Ripley, a War of 1812 hero of the Great Lakes fighting and a Maine Man, is also buried there, having moved to Louisiana in 1815. Caution, visitation is by appointment or event offering only. Call Audubon State Commemorative Area for that.
