I'm reading John Herberich Masters of the Field on the 4th US Cav. He mentions that an officer can hold four ranks: his regular commission in the regulars, his brevet rank in the regulars, his rank as a volunteer and his brevet volunteer rank. Despite all this, his pay would remain his regular commission in the regular! Is this correct? I thought if the soldier was a volunteer he would receive at least the volunteer's pay. So, if he was a regular captain and a volunteer colonel, he would receive at least a colonel's salary.
