Francis J. Dover
b. 28 June 1760 Haw River, Orange County, North Carolina
d. 13 Dec. 1851

While a resident of York District, South Carolina, Francis J. Dover enlisted
on 11 Jul 1777 under Lt. Copeland, Capt. Jenkins and Col. Bratton and was in two
skirmishes. He then enlisted under Capt. Moffett. Dover enlisted during June or
Aug. 1779 and served under Capts. George Ross and Copeland and Cols.
Paisley, Hambright, and Williams Grimes of North Carolina. He was in the
battles of Camden, Sumter's Defeat, Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse (where
he was wounded in the leg and arm). In addition, he was in the siege of
Yorktown and saw Cornwallis surrender. Dover executed a pension application on 19
Nov 1832 while residing in Habersham County, Georgia.

I've got a half-dozen or so in various Mass. militia companies who marched on the alarm of 19 April 1775. They all arrived too late for Lexington/Concord, but two were at Bunker Hill ("the battle that won the war"), and all served to the end of the year. One re-enlisted in Jan. 1777 in the 15th Mass. Continental Line -- served at Saratoga, Monmouth, and other northern campaigns; he was also with Lafayette's Light Infantry command in Virginia, wounded at Yorktown. Then there was Capt. Agreen Crabtree (love that name!), who commanded a privateer out of Frenchman Bay, Maine -- the Nova Scotia people called him "that old pirate Crab-Tree", and commissioned their own privateers to hunt him down.
