Patrick Cleburne's Birthday

Added to Calendar: 20 dates

General Cleburne was born on March 16th 1828 at Bride Park Cottage, Kilumney, Ovens, Co Cork. Hopefully, attached, is a double picture of the bedroom where he was born. The beams are original to the building.
This is about 25 miles from I live.

I am currently reading Stonewall of the West - Patrick Cleburne & The Civil War by Craig L. Symonds. Cleburne was a fierce warrior on the field of battle and he was highly respected by the men under his command. As Robert E. Lee said, Cleburne was "a meteor shining from a clouded sky."

March 17, 1828: Patrick Cleburne born in Ovens, Ireland
Its a common misconception that Cleburne was born on St. Paddy's Day. Most modern biographers (such as Craig Symonds) found via records that he was born on the 16th. Maybe it was because the birthday was so close, and it helps reinforce the Irish connection. "Born on St. Patrick's Day".

The Lee quote is apocryphal. It was created by his former adjutant and first major biographer, Irving Buck. His book on Cleburne is the source for this quote, which appears in no other writings by Lee, or accounts from those around Lee himself. It seems Buck invented the quote to make it look like Lee was impressed by Cleburne as a general.
Still a great quote though, no matter who said it, it is absolutely accurate in describing Cleburne & the Army of Tennessee, under which he served.
