Hello all, I've been lurking here for awhile and finally decided to join. I collect antique photos and picked this one up a few months ago. Are the mans striped pants part of a uniform or just fancy dress for the period?

Welcome from the Railroads and Steam Locomotive Forum. Do you know what era the picture is from? For some reason I can't explain it looks post-war era.
Lubliner.
Based on the woman's dress it's early 1860s. Sleeves are supposed to have gotten looser than that later on in the decade based on my research but I'm no expert.

Hello and welcome to the forums from Germany.
The term for that kind of pants is galon striped pants.
You can google that, there are still lots of pants that have them even today, they are still fashionable. But your hunch was intially correct, the origin of these galon stripes is indeed the military. Probably in the way we wear camouflaged shirts and pants now.
