We read about the paroling of prisoners in the war and here is a hand-written parole of a great uncle of mine, Schuyler Baker, who served in the 7th Ohio Vol, Inf. and was captured after the Battle of Cedar Mountain. It was signed by the Assistant Surgeon of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry. I doubt many of these early war documents survived so I'm posting it as an example. I wonder if someone dictated these to the prisoners who then wrote their own.

S. J. Baker served from 7 June 1861 to 23 March 1863 and was discharged as disabled. He was 6' tall and descended from a long list of men who had served in King Philips War and the Revolution.
