Just a heads up for these who may not know or have read, the Gettysburg National Militray Park hours are now posted sunrise to sunset.
I for one will miss watching a thunderstorm roll in from across South Mountain at night or enjoying a full moon and starry night out there.

I read the entire press release and I believe the new hours allow for visitations up to 30 minutes after sunset. I absolutely agree with you about watching sunset on the battlefield and I agree about moon-lit nights. But I also see the point about safety after dark.

It should be until 10:00pm, Unless they've been flooded with incidents in those late hours which would demand a change.
During the summer months, the sun does not finish setting until well after 9 PM. The rest of the year is different, of course. But during the primary visitation months, your 10 PM wish should be just about right.

I said 10pm, because that was the time posted on the signs when I visited last weekend. If it changed, they hopefully had a good reason for it. If 10pm served faithfully all year round, I have no problem with that.

Sunset at Gettysburg is never after 8:40 PM and for most of the tourist season, it is earlier than that. For example in late August, the sun goes down around 7:45 PM. Therefore, it is always completely dark by 9:30 PM and usually earlier.

The attached image was captured abut 9:30 PM on a June evening in 2015. This is at the moment the sun went down.

That is a nice picture, but you are incorrect about the time of the picture being 9:30. That's not possible. Sunrise and sunset times are my specialty. I'm guessing that the time stamp is wrong or set on the wrong time zone. The picture was taken at around 8:30. That is about when the sun goes down at Gettysburg in June. You can check that for yourself online.

I took the picture myself. At your suggestion, I'll go back and look at the notes.

The good news is that I found my 9:42 PM image from this date. The bad news is that this is not it. Thus, I was wrong. If the administrators need to take this down due to inaccurate information -- mine -- then that is fair and proper.

However, the original question in this string was on the matter of the Park closing time. As I believe the new rule allows for visitors up to 30 minutes after sundown, it seems reasonable to me. The image above could be captured under the new rules.
