After listening to the audio version of Hurst's biography on Nathan Bedford Forrest a question came to mind. If I remember my facts correctly Forrest had to ask for a pardon from the President - channeled through the governor - before he could conduct certain business. My question is this: Were there any high ranking officers or other CSA officials who did not ask or would not accept a pardon because of principle or loyalty to the South?

Early was pardoned in 1868 by President Andrew Johnson, but still remained an unreconstructed rebel. In 1869, he returned to Virginia and resumed the practice of law.

Unreconstructed rebel
" Meaning: Not reconciled to social, political, or economic change; maintaining outdated attitudes, beliefs, and practices.
Not reconciled to the outcome of the American Civil War"

I do not know for sure if he asked for the pardon or not but he was pardoned and practiced law after 1869 in the US

I think you mean who did not ask for a pardon beteen 65-68, heres 90k of those who did ask in 65-67.

Top right hand has a browse subject, from it ( http://www.footnote.com/browse.php#31| ) you can pull up pension rolls, soldiers serve records etc.

This is an excellent resocure and i highly recomend it, you get 7 days for free, CW maps and Bradys photos, custer court martial records and some other stuff is also free.

It would seem then that president Johnson eventually granted amnesty to all those in the Confederacy - whether they asked for it or wanted it or not.

I would think, given N.B. Forrest final order to his troopers, That he would do whatever he thought proper to remain a citizen in good standing. Not having read the book I admit this is an assumption on my part so I'm ready for any and all incoming.:laugh1:
