Ever since they were invented in 1783 Aeronauts dreamed of crossing an ocean by balloon. They knew it could not be done with a 'Montgolfier' or fire (hot air) balloon, but knew in their hearts it could be successfully accomplished in a balloon filled with a lighter than air gas such as hydrogen or 'city' (coal) gas. Before their attempts were put on hold by the start of the Civil War, Aeronauts John Wise and Thaddeus Lowe worked endlessly in their quests to cross the Atlantic by balloon. I'll share more Civil War specifics as this discussion grows.
