PA Soldier

That's nice. I love the man's name: John Always Young. These guys pop up on findagrave.com in almost every cemetery search in my county. It's an even nicer discovery when you find one unexpectedly on a cemetery walk.

If you were asking about my avatar, that's my great uncle (yes, we have very long generations in our family). He was actually a union cavalry man and is holding a Lefaucheux pinfire. He enlisted in the 2nd MO cavalry, US, (Merrill's Horse) on August 11, 1862 at Glasgow, Missouri. I believe the photo was probably taken on the day of his enlistment. I can't explain why his newly-issued shell jacket looks so light in the photo, except to say that some photo emulsions don't see blue very well. We graphic artists formerly used that to our advantage back in the days of film pre-press. I can tell you that in a post-war photo of him, his shell jacket looks properly dark. And the photo is lightly tinted by the photographer. Very nice image. He looks so idealistic in the young photo, but sort of haunted and hardened in the later photo. It's hard to describe, but the change is there.

Noman, I just started a new thread title "Missouri Veteran-2 photos" in the general discussion forum. It tells a little about James and shows and older picture of him as well.
